Excellence and Diversity Go Hand in Hand at Berkeley

A Message from Associate Dean Carlos Fernandez-Pello

Almost all of our graduate programs (97%) are ranked among the top 10 in their fields nationally. The excellence we experience in our classrooms and labs is, in large part, tied to Berkeley’s diversity. A wide range of perspectives boosts creativity, which is essential to our scholarship and research.

As an international member of the faculty, a diverse atmosphere makes me feel much more at home. Diversity here extends to the entire Bay Area, where the environment is refreshing and intellectually charged. You’ll find many communities of color here. At Berkeley, you will discover how vibrant and rewarding teaching and research can be. I encourage you to explore the possibilities.

As associate dean, I work to increase diversity and graduate support for students, to ensure that access to graduate study is possible. If you come to Berkeley, you will find a wide range of services to help you achieve your goals. They include the Graduate Diversity Program, the Graduate Fellowships Office, the Graduate Student Instructor Teaching and Resource Center, and a variety of publications, events, and online resources. The networks of opportunity are not limited to the campus but can also be found in our surrounding communities, where many Berkeley graduate students contribute their time and talents to help others.

Graduate Diversity Program

The Graduate Diversity Program staff assists in the recruitment, admission, and graduation of students who enrich the diversity of the graduate programs on campus. This unit administers the American Indian Graduate Program and the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP), all of which provide students with a network of academic and social support.
