Graduate Division Offices
Who we are: We are the people who oversee your progress from the time you are admitted until you complete your graduate program. Although your department will be your primary resource, Graduate Division staff can also guide you through the various steps required for your degree. We're here to help you not only complete your degree but also to help you enjoy the most enriching experience possible at Berkeley.

How to find us: Our offices for student services are located on the third floor of Sproul Hall and are open from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Drop box: To drop off correspondence and forms before or after office hours, you may leave them in the drop box located on the counter across from 302 Sproul Hall, or in Box 2 in the basement of Sproul Hall near the Bancroft Way entrance.

Office of the Dean
The graduate deans are available for advice and assistance if students cannot solve problems in their home departments. Graduate Dean Andrew Szeri oversees all of the units in the Graduate Division and is an ex officio member of the Graduate Council and the Chancellor’s cabinet. The Dean is assisted by three associate deans and the staff of the Office of the Dean.

Graduate Academic Services
The Academic Services Unit offers programs and workshops to develop the skills necessary to complete your graduate degree. Workshop topics include academic publishing, academic writing, dissertation writing, editing, and grant writing.

The Graduate Admissions staff advises applicants, faculty, and departments on policy and procedure for admission to graduate study at Berkeley.

Graduate Appointments
The Graduate Appointments staff reviews the appointments of graduate students to academic titles (Graduate Student Instructor, Graduate Student Researcher, Reader, Tutor) and staff titles to ensure compliance with policy and procedure established by the Office of the President, the Graduate Council, and the Graduate Division. The unit also monitors eligibility for fee and tuition remission programs.

The Communications & Events staff produces eGrad, a newsletter you will receive by email each month; The Graduate magazine in fall and spring, the Guide to Graduate Policy, and the Graduate Division website (www.grad.berkeley.edu).

Graduate Degrees
The Graduate Degrees staff monitors student progress from registration to graduation. You can drop in or schedule an appointment to discuss general academic or personal concerns about registration, changes in class schedule, withdrawal, readmission, application to the qualifying exams, advancement to candidacy, filing fee, probation, and eligibility for the Dean’s Normative Time Fellowship. Master's theses and doctoral dissertations are filed in this unit.

Graduate Development Office
The Development Office in the Graduate Division coordinates fundraising initiatives for graduate student support at UC Berkeley. The office works with private individuals, foundations, and corporations to ensure that the University can attract top graduate applicants each year and maintain its excellence in research and teaching.

Graduate Diversity Program Office of Outreach & Retention
The Graduate Diversity Program staff assists in the recruitment, admission, and graduate of students who enrich the diversity of the graduate programs on campus. This unit administers the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) and provides students with a network of academic and social support. The director of the Graduate Diversity Program provides personal advising and strategies for academic success. This office also includes the American Indian Graduate Program (597 Barrows Hall, 642-3228, www.grad.berkeley.edu/aigp/).

Graduate Fellowships
The Graduate Fellowships staff is responsible for most merit-based and merit plus need-based financial awards and administers university fellowships, departmental block grants, federally funded fellowships, and foundation and corporate awards. Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) Teaching & Resource Center
The GSI Teaching and Resource Center provides pedagogical support and guidance for new and continuing GSIs. Center services include fall and spring teaching conferences, workshops on teaching, the GSI Online Course on Professional Standards and Ethics, grants and awards for GSIs and faculty, confidential consultations, the Language Proficiency Program for international GSIs, and the Teaching Guide for GSIs.
