Job Description:
The Graduate Division is the administrative arm of the Graduate Council, a committee of the Berkeley Academic Senate responsible for setting policy for graduate study at Berkeley. The Graduate Division exercises oversight for the admission of graduate students, recruitment for diversity, administration of graduate student support, monitoring of academic progress, preparation of Graduate Student Instructors, granting of graduate degrees, quality reviews of graduate groups, graduate education policy and institutional research, and public outreach about the graduate education environment both internal and external to the campus.
This programmer/analyst position is responsible for designing and developing complex transactional and reporting applications for use by staff in Graduate Division, academic departments and central administrative offices to process graduate student information. Because the Graduate Division is participating in campus-wide efforts to develop a new student systems software platform and architecture (the Student Systems 2012 Initiative), this position will also be working on an innovative set of applications and services using an architecture based on Java, Web Services, rules engines, workflow engines, enterprise service buses, BPEL and ORM frameworks. This new platform will likely be based on the architecture and code of the Kuali Student Services System, a community source system being developed by major universities. In addition, this position will be working with technologies that integrate well with the Kuali Technologies including http servers, J2EE application servers, the oracle database server and the PL/SQL language.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, test, and maintain complex transactional and reporting systems in an application server and Web Services based environment. Systems are used to input, process and report on Graduate Division information that includes graduate student fellowships, degrees, recruitment and retention, appointments, and fee remissions;
- Design and develop an integrated software architecture platform for use by Graduate Division Systems Unit emphasizing reuse and integration with other systems;
- Train and mentor other technical staff in the use and extension of the new software platform being developed for Graduate Division systems;
- Document, maintain and convert complex legacy systems.
Requirements & Qualifications:
Advanced knowledge of information systems including:
- Java. Has demonstrated experience developing in Java at an advanced level.
- J2EE. Has demonstrated experience developing J2EE systems. Experience using standard J2EE desgin patterns (MVC, inversion of control, etc.) and in creating POJO systems is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience designing database objects (tables, indexes, keys, etc.) and writing SQL. Experience with the Oracle database of PL/SQL is preferred.
- HTML. Has demonstrated experience developing complex HTML pages and editing them by hand.
- Javascript. Demonstrated experience using Javascript. Experience using Ajax and GWT is preferred.
- Object Oriented Programming. Has demonstrated experience applying the principles of object oriented programming. Experience with Gang of Four design patterns and refactoring is preferred.
- Computer Science Principles. Has a good grasp of computer science principles. Has demonstrated experience using this knowledge to quickly learn new programming languages and approaches.
- Software Lifecycle. Familiar with both traditional (waterfall, RUP) and agile/extreme programming software lifecycle for the development of mission-critical systems containing sensitive data stored in a complex relational database. Prefer experience with continuous integration, unit testing and other agile techniques.
- Documentation. Has demonstrated skills in documenting systems. Has demonstrated skills in writing Javadoc. Has demonstrated experience using industry standard coding standards.
- Knowledge of higher education, including services to students, preferred.
Intermediate skills in:
- Unix.
- Windows.
- Software architecture evaluation, design and deployment.
- Analyzing languages and software tools to determine if they are appropriate for a project.
Demonstrated ability to:
- work on multiple projects with a high degree of autonomy;
- maintain focus on customer needs and effective use of technology tools to meet those needs;
- contribute effectively in a strong team environment;
- mentor and train other technical staff
Must have demonstrated skills in:
- communication with non-technical customers, members of technical team, and vendors;

Job Description:
The GSI Teaching and Resource Center, established in 1989, is an academic unit in the Graduate Division at UC Berkeley. The Center works with departments, faculty, staff, and campus administrators in offering a wide range of programs that prepare Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) for the teaching they will do at Berkeley and in future careers. The Center's programs include teaching conferences, workshops, and seminars for faculty on teaching with GSIs, award programs, and academic courses on teaching, learning, and mentoring. Through its Language Proficiency Program, the Center provides oral English proficiency testing and courses for international GSIs. In collaboration with Graduate Division Academic Services, the Center offers a Summer Institute for Preparing Future Faculty.
The Assistant Director contributes to the development, implementation, and assessment of programs offered by the GSI Teaching and Resource Center such as teaching conferences, workshops, grant and award programs, seminars, electronic and print publications, and outreach to departments.
Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director develops programs that prepare graduate students to utilize instructional technology; serves as primary resource for instructional applications of technology at the Center; guides the ongoing development of our website; conducts research for and updates our online course on professional standards and ethics in teaching.
Requirements & Qualifications:
REQUIRED:
- Extensive experience designing, implementing, and assessing instructional uses of technology and creating websites;
- Expert competency and extensive experience with multimedia development tools used to incorporate video, audio, graphics, and other elements into instructional experiences;
- Experience designing, conducting, and assessing training workshops for faculty or graduate students;
- Demonstrated excellence in college teaching;
- Knowledge of current directions in teaching and learning in higher education and graduate student professional development;
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills;
- Experience in program administration;
- Demonstrated engagement with educational issues pertaining to diversity;
- Ph.D. or Ed.D.
PREFERABLE:
- Experience with UC policies and procedures.
