Professor Shepard is recognized as a cognitive scientist as well as the father of spatial relations-based research. He received the National Medal of Science for his contributions to the field of cognitive science. In 2006, he was awarded the Rumelhart Prize in theoretical foundations of human cognition. Shepard is Ray Lyman Wilbur Professor Emeritus of Social Science at Stanford University.
