Thomas Metzinger is the Director of the Philosophy Group at the Department of Philosophy at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz. He also is the Chair of the Department of Philosophy and has served as a full professor since 2000. His research focuses on philosophy of mind, especially on consciousness and the nature of the self. Metzinger’s research engages philosophical aspects of empirical theories in the neuro-and cognitive sciences, and artificial intelligence. He also studies ethics, especially conceptual connections between applied ethics, the philosophy of the mind, and anthropology.
