Frede is recognized as one of the most distinguished experts in ancient philosophy in the world. His two early books, "Prädikation und Existenzaussage" (1967) and "Die Stoische Logik" (1974), established him as an extraordinarily acute and rigorous philosopher.

Born in Berlin in 1940, Frede earned his Ph.D. at Göttingen in 1966 and held the post of Wissenschaftlicher Assistent there from 1966 to 1971. Having first come to Berkeley as a Visiting Lecturer in 1968-69, he joined the faculty of the Department of Philosophy in 1971 as an Assistant Professor and rose to the rank of full Professor with extraordinary rapidity. In 1976, he left Berkeley to teach at Princeton; he returned to Europe in 1991 to take the chair in the History of Philosophy at Oxford University.

Frede is a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the British Academy, and a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
