How to Create an Academic Appointment

Step Six Generate Fee Remissions

Fee remissions are generated as a result of an eligible appointment being in the payroll (PPS) system. An appointment that is only in HRMS will not generate a fee remission. Problems with transmission of data from HRMS to PPS should be referred to the HRMS help desk at 643-4443.

Fee remissions are charged to the chart string that you enter into HRMS as the salary source for the appointment. Fee remissions are not paid through Graduate Division funds.

If a student has multiple academic appointments, all the appointments’ chart strings will be charged for the fee remission proportionately to the appointment percentages.

For a GSR to receive a fee remission, the appointment will need to be for the entire semester. Multiple GSR appointments may combine to create a fee remission (please contact the Appointments Unit directly for more information).

Fee remissions are based on the percentage of time worked and the duration of the appointment, not necessarily the title code. For example, a 25% GSR appointment for the entire semester will generate a fee remission, even if a 3266 title code is used.

For a GSI, Reader, or Tutor to receive a fee remission, the student will need to work at least 25% time (170 hours) during the semester (not counting holidays or weekends) through either a single appointment or in combination with additional GSI, Reader, Tutor, or GSR appointment(s).

The process for a payroll appointment to generate a fee remission requires 10-14 days after the appointment appears in the payroll system (PPS). At the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters, there will be a brief window of time where you can generate fee remissions through the “Interim Fee Remission” link in GLOW.  This link allows you to generate a fee remission by the end of the third week of classes which would ensure part of the Registration requirement of having paid at least 20% of the student’s fees.  Using this link is NOT a substitute for entering appointments into the payroll system.
