MEMO: Graduate Student Academic Appointment and Fee Remission Procedures - Fall 2003
Office of the Dean
Graduate Division
University of California, Berkeley
July 29, 2003
TO: Management Services Officers and Graduate Assistants
FROM: Carlos Fernandez-Pello, Associate Dean
SUBJECT: Graduate Student Academic Appointment and Fee Remissions Procedures - Fall 2003
I am happy to serve as Associate Dean for the Graduate Division for the fall 2003 semester while Dean Duggan is on sabbatical and look forward to working with the departments on academic appointments issues.
I would like to encourage all departments and hiring units to enter appointments into HRMS for the fall 2003 semester by Tuesday, September 2. Hiring units can help students avoid problems related to late registration and late fees if they process student academic appointments on time.
Students holding appointments during the fall semester must be registered and enrolled in at least eight units no later than Friday, September 12, 2003. Please encourage your students to be aware of this deadline, and remind students that enrolling in classes does not mean that they are registered for the semester. All departments should verify student registration in Bear Facts or the UCB Registration Information System (URIS) to ensure that their students meet the September 12 deadline.
Students who are on approved Filing Fee status cannot be appointed as GSIs, AI-GSs, or GSRs. However, these students can be appointed to Reader and Tutor positions.
Information about appointments for the fall 2003 semester is available on the Graduate Division web site: Procedural Information for Graduate Student Academic Appointments (ASEs and GSRs), including:
- Fee remissions
- A list of important appointment dates and deadlines
- Academic eligibility criteria
- The downloadable Excel spreadsheet for submitting ASE appointment and fee remission data
I would like to remind you that appointment notification and supplemental appointment letters to ASEs are required by the UC-UAW contract. The contract and sample appointment letters are available on the Labor Relations Web site. If you have questions about appointment notification and supplemental letters or the UC-UAW contract for ASEs, please contact Labor Relations at (510) 643-6001 or labrel@berkeley.edu.
