Office of the Dean
Graduate Division
University of California, Berkeley

January 7, 2008

To: Deans and Chairs, Faculty Advisers for GSI Affairs
From: Joseph J. Duggan, Associate Dean, Graduate Division

The Graduate Division would like to alert you that all first-time ASEs for Spring 2008 must attend an orientation pursuant to Article 26 of the agreement between the University of California and the United Auto Workers. The orientation will consist of a thirty-minute presentation by Labor Relations and a thirty-minute presentation by the UAW.

All first-time Graduate Student Instructors, Readers, and Tutors are required to attend one of the following orientation sessions organized by Labor Relations:

*January 17, 2008
*4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
150 University Hall

*January 23, 2008
*4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
150 University Hall

*February 1, 2008
*8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
150 University Hall

New ASEs will be identified by payroll records and attendance will be recorded at orientation sessions. If an appointee does not attend one of the mandatory sessions, he or she must attend an orientation session the following semester or be ineligible for future appointments.

Thank you for your assistance in disseminating this information to all your first-time ASEs.
