MEMO: Applications for Graduate Admissions and Fellowships in PDF Format
Office of the Dean
Graduate Division
University of California, Berkeley
July 30, 2007
Dear Colleagues,
Beginning eight years ago, the Berkeley campus accepted applications for graduate admissions and fellowships submitted in electronic format. Since then, the proportion of applications submitted on-line has grown steadily, currently exceeding 99%. During the last application cycle, only 170 applications were submitted on paper, the majority of which came from domestic applicants. From a position of once having to print 85,000 applications per year, we can now cease producing printed applications entirely.
Beginning with the 2008-09 admissions cycle that starts in September, 2007, the Graduate Division will be providing the Admissions and Fellowships Application in the usual on-line format but also as a PDF document, which will replace the printed format. The PDF version of the application will allow programs the flexibility to either e-mail the PDF as an attachment or to print and mail individual copies of the PDF to applicants who are not able, or do not wish, to submit the application electronically. Another advantage of this change is that it gives us the ability to revise the document on short notice, while enjoying savings in printing, shipping, and storage costs, and eliminating the need for storage space. International applicants wishing to use the PDF version may also have the PDF copy made available to them more quickly than if traditional mail were the only option.
If you have any questions about this matter, please contact the Director of Graduate Admissions, Corinne Kosmitzki, at 643-5157 or ckosmitzki@berkeley.edu.
Sincerely,
Joseph J. Duggan
Associate Dean
