The Graduate Opportunity Program (GOP), the major need-based financial aid program for minority graduate students who have been historically underrepresented at Berkeley, remains committed to maintaining diversity on campus.
The GOP staff encourages you to stop by the office at 316 Sproul Hall if you have questions about student outreach and retention. GOP dispenses personal, financial, and academic advice, and provides limited financial assistance for hiring tutors, attending conferences, and meeting special needs.
You can schedule an appointment with Associate Dean Z. Renee Sung by calling 642-6721. Or you can drop by the office and introduce yourself to the GOP staff: Pamela D. Jennings, director; Linda L. Manly, fellowship coordinator; and Cynthia N. Dong, administrative assistant.
Underrepresented women and minority undergraduates also are welcome to stop by. The GOP staff can answer questions about applying to graduate school, and provide information about the Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP).
Two-Year Award Renewals
A reminder to continuing GOP award recipients: If you received a two-year award when you were admitted to graduate school, you must apply to renew your award for a second year. Renewals are not automatic. Applications are due February 10.
Updates on whether and how future awards may be affected by Proposition 209, currently under court injunction, will be made available on the Graduate Division Web site (http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/) as that information is available.
Diversity Outreach Volunteers
In the meantime, the GOP staff--mindful that diversity can't be taken for granted--is creating an outreach network of graduate students. Volunteers may be asked to represent the University at local and national outreach events and assist in workshops targeted at underrepresented students. They may also advise prospective students in their fields, via e-mail or telephone.
If you would like to volunteer or find out more about the network, contact Pamela D. Jennings at 643-6010 or pamelaj@uclink.berkeley.edu.
