The Graduate Opportunity Program (GOP) remains committed to maintaining diversity on the Berkeley campus. GOP helps students meet the cost of their education and provides support services in an effort to maintain a more diverse graduate student community. The Graduate Opportunity Program serves as a resource for financial assistance, retention issues, information networking, and outreach designed to increase the enrollment and graduation of underrepresented minority students.
The GOP staff encourages you to stop by the office at 316 Sproul Hall if you have questions about student outreach and retention. Or, you can simply drop by and say hello to the staff: Pamela D. Jennings, Director; Anna Basallaje, Fellowships/Retention Coordinator; Michael Sacramento, Outreach Assistant; and Kenneth S. Mahru, Administrative Assistant. GOP dispenses personal, financial, and academic advice and provides limited financial assistance for hiring tutors, attending conferences, and meeting special needs.
Professor Z. Renee Sung of the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology serves as the Associate Dean of diversity issues and fellowships; however, Dean Sung is on sabbatical for the spring 1999 semester. Professor Elaine Kim of the Department of Ethnic Studies is the Acting Associate Dean. To schedule an appointment with Dean Kim, you may contact her assistant at 642-6721.
Two-Year Award Renewals
A reminder to continuing GOP Award recipients: If you received a two-year award when you were admitted, you must apply to renew your award for a second year. Renewals are not automatic. Applications are due on Friday, February 12, 1999.
Diversity Outreach Volunteers
GOP continues to solicit volunteers for its outreach volunteer network. If you would like to represent the University at local or national outreach events, assist in workshops targeted at underrepresented students, or make yourself available from time to time to advise potential students (via e-mail or telephone), GOP would welcome your participation. If you would like to volunteer, find out more about the network, or offer ideas regarding outreach, please contact Pamela D. Jennings at 643-6010 or pamelaj@uclink4.berkeley.edu.
